Number of unemployed Medical Laboratory Scientists in Nigeria
According to AMLSN National Publicity Secretary Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi, Nigeria has about 30,000 young Medical Laboratory Scientists who are not only struggling to survive but are unable to contribute to the growth of the health sector because they are unemployed.
Speaking to the PUNCH Healthwise, he said:
"As of today, we have a large army of about 30,000 unemployed young Medical Laboratory Scientists who are either unemployed, underemployed or stranded in the unemployment market.
“This is because there is a tacit embargo on the deployment of laboratory scientists being fueled and perpetuated by Nigerian doctors, particularly those in the Nigerian Medical Association, Medical and Dental Consultants and the College of Nigerian Pathologists,”
Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi blamed the problem on lack of equity on the part of the Federal Ministry of Health and heads of medical parastatals in the country.
