Highpoints of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) in 2019



2019 was a remarkable year for members of the Medical Laboratory Science profession in Nigeria as the profession recorded more groundbreaking achievements this year than other years.

In this post we look at some highpoints of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigerian in 2019 in no particular order


1. Reconstitution of the MLSCN Governing Board.

 It came as a surprise to many when the news for the reconstitution of the board broke into public knowledge. The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria had being without a governing board since 2015.

The reconstitution came fews days after the Director of Special duties, Medical Lab. Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) Dr. Lawrena Okoro and AMLSN publicity secretary Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi appeared on Nigeria Television Authority breakfast programme  'Goodmorning  Nigeria' and spoke at length on the need for the Federal Government to reconstitute the MLSCN board.

The reconstitution of the board was contained in a letter from the Federal Ministry of Health to the Council dated 16th April, 2019.



2. Confirmation of a Substantive Registrar


Following the reconstitution of the board, the acting registrar was confirmed as the substantive registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) .

This was hailed by many as a good move going by what Dr. Tosan Erhabor who had been under acting capacity since 15th of June 2016 had achieved within the short span of time.


3. MLSCN facility got accreditation


The MLSCN owned National External Quality Assurance Laboratory (NEQAL), Saye, Zaria built with Technical support from the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) was granted ISO accreditation.

The ISO/IEC 17043 Accreditation was granted by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS). This is a significant milestone applauded by many.

ISO/IEC 17043:2010 specifies general requirements for the competence of providers of proficiency testing schemes and for the development and operation of proficiency testing schemes.
